Sample matrices have been developed for each TARGET disease project to specify which data is available for each patient/case. Each row of a sample matrix represents a single patient/case and the columns provide information about data availability for different characterization platforms and data levels as well as sample identifiers used in the analyses. A "Comments" column is provided at the end of each row that may contain additional information that is important to note for that case.

Each sample matrix contains a "Sample Names" tab and a "Coded" tab. The "Sample Names" tab provides full TARGET barcodes for the samples used for each characterization platform while the "Coded" tab provides a graphical view of the available files within the dataset. This "Coded" tab provides color-coded Y/N/F abbreviations for each data type and data level that may be used as a summary view of the dataset. ("Y" = data is available for this sample, data type, and data level, "N" = data was not generated for this sample, data type, and data level, "F" = characterization failed for this sample, data type, and data level.)

Each TARGET cohort contains cases that are considered to be fully characterized based on criteria that can be found on an additional tab within each sample matrix named "FCC Criteria". Note that these criteria can be different for each TARGET project.
